These beads rest on a diffuser board, while blowers located in the bed's pedestals circulate air across the board, causing the beads to behave like a liquid. This process is known as fluidization.

The primary benefit of air-fluidized therapy is its ability to enhance capillary blood flow to the skin, promoting the rapid growth of granulated tissue.
