Hydroaire AFT Bed

HydroAire Airfluidized Therapy Bed - Applesoft Med Solutions

What is it and how does it work?

The HydroAire AFT bed features a tub filled with glass ceramic beads known as microspheres, which account for the majority of the bed's weight, totaling around 900 lbs (the bed itself weighs 221 lbs without the beads). These beads rest on a diffuser board, while blowers located in the bed's pedestals circulate air across the board, causing the beads to behave like a liquid. This process is known as fluidization.

Traditional air mattresses struggle to maintain consistent pressure below 32 mmHg, which is crucial for preventing capillary closure. The primary benefit of air-fluidized therapy is its ability to enhance capillary blood flow to the skin, promoting the rapid growth of granulated tissue. Additionally, any secretions and exudates are drained through the filter sheet, ensuring that the patient's skin remains dry. The HydroAire AFT bed excels at maintaining the lowest interface pressure, providing an optimal environment for wound healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • An Air Fluidized Therapy bed is an advanced wound care support surface that uses millions of tiny beads suspended by air to create a fluid-like environment.

    This technology:

    • Minimizes pressure on the skin

    • Reduces shear and friction

    • Helps control moisture

The result is a healing environment, not just a support surface.

  • A HydroAire AFT bed is typically used for:

    • Stage 3 or Stage 4 pressure injuries

    • Non-healing or deteriorating wounds

    • Patients who have failed on Group 2 support surfaces (E0277)

    • Post-surgical or complex wound cases

If the wound is not progressing with standard care, this is often the next level of intervention.

  • Standard surfaces help with pressure redistribution.

Air Fluidized Therapy goes further by:

    • Immersing the patient to offload pressure almost completely

    • Eliminating shear forces more effectively

    • Creating a near “zero-pressure” environment

This is why it’s often reserved for the most challenging wounds.

  • Yes. While traditionally used in hospitals or LTACHs, HydroAire AFT beds can be safely placed in the home when medically necessary.

    We coordinate:

    • Delivery and setup

    • Patient and caregiver education

    • Ongoing support

Bringing hospital-level care directly to the patient.

  • In many cases, yes—when specific medical criteria are met.

    Coverage typically requires:

    • Documentation of severe wounds (Stage 3 or 4)

    • Failure of less intensive surfaces

    • Physician documentation supporting medical necessity

We assist providers in aligning documentation with Medicare guidelines to improve approval outcomes.

  • In most cases, we can coordinate delivery within 24–72 hours, depending on location and documentation readiness.

    Our goal is simple:
No unnecessary delays when healing is on the line

  • We typically need:

    • A physician’s order

    • Wound documentation

    • Patient clinical history

    • Current support surface information

If anything is missing, our team helps guide the process so nothing slows you down.

  • This service is commonly requested by:

    • Physicians

    • Nurse Practitioners

    • Wound care specialists

    • Hospital discharge planners

    • Home health agencies

Anyone responsible for managing complex wounds can initiate the process.

  • While outcomes vary, many providers see:

    • Improved wound progression

    • Reduction in pressure-related complications

    • Better patient comfort and positioning

The key is placing the right therapy at the right time.

  • We don’t just drop equipment and leave.

    We provide:

    • Ongoing support and coordination

    • Clinical insight when needed

    • Assistance with any equipment-related issues
